The Asheville School of Massage & Yoga is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Approved Provider # 450444-07.

Unless otherwise noted:

  • Workshops are usually 3, 7, 14, or 21 contact hours.  The cost of course are listed in individual course descriptions.     
  • Class times for a 21 hour weekend course are usually:  Friday 1pm-6pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-6pm.  Single 7 hour courses are from 9am-5pm. Times for 3 hour and series courses vary.
  • For all bodywork classes, please bring one set of twin sheets per day plus massage oil or cream (in a spill-proof container).
  • Tables are provided by the school.
  • There will be a 1-hour lunch break on full days (Thursdays, Saturday, & Sunday); bring a bag lunch or come prepared to buy lunch at one of the restaurants close-by.

    Course Description:  A new effective approach to hot stone massage including aromatherapy, reflexology and acupressure in one amazing treatment.   A two day workshop to instruct you in the amazingly relaxing and penetrating techniques of hot stone therapy. The class covers how to theapeutically and safely deliver a full body hot stone massage. This treatment allows you to get deeper into your client's muscular problems and save your hands.  It includes demostration and hands-on practice as well as instruction in benefits, contraindications, equipment and safety.  The class also show how principles of other modalities may be used to enhance a standard hot stone routine.  By the end of this wonderful two day workshop, participants will give and receive a full 90 minute hot stone massage.  You will then be able to incorporate it into your own practice, increasing your business and easing strain on your body.  This wonderful new modality is one your clients will love and will distinguish you from other practitioners in your area.

    Sabrina Smith, LPN, LMBT, NCBTMB#450-874-08.  Sabrina is a licensed practical nurse and licensed massage and bodywork therapist.  She has spent the last decade in the field of health care and continued her education in many modalities of massage.  She has experience working in world class spas and building her own clientele. Sabrina currently uses her massage therapy skills in conjunction with chiropractic care.  Her method of Integrated Hot Stones and it unique combination of Aromatherapy, Acupressure and Reflexlogy is one she is excited about bringing to other therapists.  She has filmed an educational DVD on the subject and in 2010 released her own line of aromatherapy oils for professional use.  She is approved the by the NCBTMB as a provider of continuing education.

    Class Description:  It feels good and fun to do!  In this weekend workshop, you will become certified in the art of the Massage Cupping technique. Massage Cupping helps to "separate" layers of fused, congested soft tissue. This brings better water absorption and renewed blood flow to undernourished and dehydrated tissues. Cupping enhances the benefit of massage, decreases strain on the practitioner, and increases revenues through "add-on" service.

    Annie Garic has been interested in health and well-being her entire life. She graduated with a BS degree in Health and Physical Education from the University of New Orleans and a MA degree in Physical Education from Southern Methodist University. She then taught Health & PE for ten years. In 1988 she began her study and practice of therapeutic massage. Annie has been a teaching assistant with Advanced Continuing Education since 2004 and in 2007 became a Certified Massage Cupping™ Educator.

    Course Description:  In this course we will be exploring Myofascial techniques for three areas that clients often experience pain and discomfort, the neck shoulder and low back.  An anatomy review and discussion of potential problems contributing to pain or discomfort for each area will be reviewed prior to learning the techniques for these areas.  Students will learn new, effective techniques for working with clients, seated, supine and in the side lying position.  Movement and stretching techniques will also be incorporated in our exploration of the neck, shoulder, and low back.

    Marion Stone earned her B.S. from Davidson College in 1989 and an associate's degree in Nursing in 2002 from Asheville Buncombe Community College.  In 1996, Marion completed her training at the Guild for Structural Integration and has been helping others find more balance and freedom in their bodies since that time. 

    For the past five years, Marion has been instructing at the Asheville School of Massage and Yoga, where she teaches Anatomy, Physiolgy, Pathology and Myofascial Release work.  Marion also teaches Anatomy for the Asheville Yoga Center's teacher training certification program and has taught Pathology for the Costa Rica School of Massage.  Marion loves to weave her love for alignment and her fascination with the power of linking together breath, body, mind and movement into her classes.

    Course description:  Working the various anatomy systems as reflected on the feet can have a beneficial effect on the body organs and a person's overall health.  Essential oils are complex plant essences that contain a kaleidoscope of naturally occurring chemical components to balance and support the body.  This course focuses on gainings skills in reflexology , along with a solid fondation in essential oils selected for the purpose of supporting particular body systems. 

    Tacy Apostolik is a board certified (ARCB) reflexologist trained at the Omega Institute, NY as has been practicing relexology for over 7 years.  She trained in reflexology assisted fertility (RAF) techniques, focusing on endocrine system balancing.  This is reinforced by individual instruction in Shiatsu and Amma massage training form Kyoto, Japan and study at five Branches University, ca.  She has also completed Level II in Reiki.  After receiving and International Certification in aromatherapy from The Pacific Institute of Aromatherapy, Ca. Tacy went on to sttudy essential oils and their effect on emotional and mental health, and essential oil use in relation to face reading and the Chinese 5 elements, with internationally recognized acupuncturist and Chinese herbalist, Jeffrey Yuen.  Tacy has contributed articles about the balancing effects of reflexology and essential oils to New Life Journal Magazine and has been teaching reflexology and essential oils classes for the past 6 years, both nationally and internationally. http://tacy-reflexology.reflexology-nc.org

    Course Description:  In this 7 hour workshop, students will learn and practice positioning of clients in ways that allow the practitioner to easily access and treat a wide assortment of conditions while using healthy body mechanics.  Emphasis will be on side-lying work, with plenty of time for practice and Questions.  Participants will learn how to efficiently and creatively use bolsters, pillos and sheets in ways that allow the practitioner to more easily treat and mobilize joints and execute stretches, while keeping the client appropriately covered and comfortable.  A more comfortable client translates into easier access to deeper tissues, which means more effective treatment, which contributes to increase dclient retention.  This workshop is designed to help new practitioners as well support seasoned massage therapist build upon their skills.

    Nancy MacDonald has been a licensed bodywork practitioner for more than 18 years.  She has been teaching fornearly her entire career.  In addition to Nueromuscular Therapy, she brings an assortment of skills to her treatment sessions, including myofascial massage, assisted stretching, and functional assessment.  She has provided therapeutic bodywork for a wide variety of conditions including sports injuries, headaches, low back pain, fibromyalgia, whiplash, TMJ disfunction, lupus, multiple scleorosis, Parkinson's disease and many other types of chronic tension and pain, even that which is difficult to identify.  Nancy was the massage therapist for the Austrian Olympic rowing team during the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta and has worked with professional athletes, musicians and other performers.  She was featured in the best practices column of the April 2007 issue of Massage magazine.

    Class Description:  Using a light touch, Cranial Sacral Therapy addresses restrictions held in the body.   Based on the work of Dr. William Sutherland, students will learn to listen and feel with their hands what Dr. Sutherland called the Primary Respiration, the flow of fluids through the cranial sacral system. In this class we will cover the history of this work, from ancient times to the present. Students will study the anatomy of the cerebral spinal fluid and it's flow through the membrane system. A majority of classroom time will be spent with hands on techniques. This class is appropriate for students new to this work as well as those that may like to fine tune their skills. 

    Phyllis Velez, LMT has been teaching in the local area since 1997. She brings to this work an intuitive, gentle touch with an inner strength and understanding of Cranial Sacral Therapy.

    After completing Level 1, NLP Level 2, gives you an opportunty to apply the tools you acquire in Level 1 and new ones on how to remove personal biases and listen effectively.     Class Description:   This class is designed to fulfill the continuing education in ethics requirement for North Carolina massage and bodywork licensing.  Referencing NC as the NCBTMB code of ethics, participants will learn the basics of client - practitioner dynamics and why professional boundaires are so important to protect both clients and ourselves.  Participants will learn how to create safe relationships by exploring the following topics:  common dilemmas and how to solve them, dealing with sexual issues, boundaries, confidentiality, fees draping, scope of practice, and dual relationships.

    Course Description:  A collection of single-act plays repesenting the humorous, awkward, and poignant relationships between client and therapist.

    Enjoy the play Friday evening, then return the next day for four hours of discussion, deciding what situations could have been avoided.  We will focus on nurturing the client-therapist relationship with healthy choices.        

    Bettina Freese's practical Nursing Degree and 11 years of experience in gymnastics provide her students at the Asheville School of Massage and Yoga,  with a bank of knowledge about sports massage and hydrotherapy.  she enjoys teaching her students how to recognize, treat, and prevent injuries.  In her private practice Bettina works mainly with athletes and sports injuries, combining Sports Massage, Ashiatu Oriental Bar Therapy, Trigger Point therapy, and shiatsu.  She is a 1997 graduate  of the UNC Chapel Hill Hournalism School.

    Course Description: Using a light touch, Cranial Sacral therapy addresses restrictions held in the body.  Based on the work of Dr. William Sutherland, students will learn to listen and fell with their hands what Dr. Sutherland called the Primary Respiration, the flow of fluids through the cranial sacral system.  In this class we will cover the history of this work from ancient times to the present.  Students will study the anatory of the cerebral spinal fluid and it's flow through the membrane system.  A majority of classroom time will be spent with hands on techniques.  This class is appropriate for students new to this work as well as those that may line to fine tune their skills.

    What better place to study Cranial Sacral therapy then at the beautiful Samai Retreat and Spa on the Ruta del Sol in San Jose, Ecuador.  The cost of the course includes the 21 CE hour course, over night lodging in Guayaquil when you arrive, transporation to Samai the following day, plus lodging and meals during your stay at Samai.  Does not include airfare.  Call the school for more trip details.
