Continuing Education

The Asheville School of Massage & Yoga is approved by the National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork. Approved Provider # 450444-07.

Unless otherwise noted:

  • Workshops are usually 3, 7, 14, or 21 contact hours.  The cost of course are listed in individual course descriptions.     
  • Class times for a 21 hour weekend course are usually:  Friday 1pm-6pm, Saturday and Sunday 9am-6pm.  Single 7 hour courses are from 9am-5pm on Saturdays. Times for 3 hour and series courses vary.
  • For all bodywork classes, please bring one set of twin sheets per day plus massage oil or cream (in a spill-proof container).
  • Tables are provided by the school.
  • There will be a 1-hour lunch break on full days (Saturday/Sunday); bring a bag lunch or come prepared to buy lunch at one of the restaurants close-by.

    Class Description:  Level 1:  Begin your exploration of Energy Anatomy with a personal analysis and review.  Review the history of eastern thought and perceptions regarding the energetic body's structure.  See how it dovetails with the western awareness of the physical body while laying foundation for a deepening understanding of energy anatomy.  Level 2: Add layers of understanding to your awareness of the energetic body.  See how acknowledging our potential areas of growth and healing within the energetic body can direct our personal development and evolution.  The tools of color, sound, smell and movement will be used to aid us in deepening our knowledge.  Level 3:  Add a layer to the cake!  Investigate how our completing our development tasks and engaging in healing our energetic bodies can enable us to be more fully present.  Create more complete personal boundaries and consciously direct our growth toward our optimal selves.

    Annette K. Scott is an animated instructor who continues to inspire students with her passionate teaching style and multidimensional approach to health and wellness.  As a licensed massage therapist in both New York and Florida, she has spent the last 7 years of her career uniting her love for teaching, bodywork, yoga, nutrition, aromatherapy, energy work, functional anatomy and dynamic exercise.  She brings every bit of her experience and passion into the classroom to create a dynamic learning environment.  Annette effectively combines the wisdom of pioneers in the field, along with her own research and development, to create a holistic model of fitness that focuses on the element of play.

    In addition to teaching, she continues to work in the field as a massage therapist, personal trainer, yoga teacher, clinical aromatherapist, lifestyle and nutrition coach, and doula.  Annette holds a B.A. in Philosophy and English literature from Lemoyne College; an M.A. in Modern Literature and Critical Theory from Leicester University, UK and is in the process of publishing the first of her books for children.

    Class Description:  This class is designed to fulfill the continuing education in ethics requirement for North Carolina massage and bodywork licensing.  Referencing North Carolina as well as the MCBTMB code of ethics, participants will learn the basics of client- practitioner dynamics and why professional boundaries are so important to protect both our clients and ourselves.  Participants will learn how to create safe relationships by exploring the following topics:  common dilemmas and how to solve them, dealing with sexual issues, boundaries, confidentiality, fees, draping, scope of practice and dual relationships.

    Pripo Teplitsky, MA LPC, LMBT - offers a diverse practice that balances the connection between mind, body, and spirit.  He is a NC licensed and nationally certified massage therapist and holds a masters degree in psychology and counseling.  Pripo lived, studied, and worker at Esalen Institute, a renowned human potential learning center in Big Sur, CA and is a certified Esalen practitioner.  He is als a licensed Professional Counselor and has a private practice in Asheville, NC where he specializes in relationship issues.

    Class Description:  Take part in a time honored process of self discovery using one of the most beautiful pieces of equipment - your very own being.  Learn many self- healing techniques through the practice of exploratory movements, pranayama (culitvation of respiration), traditional asanas (positions) and heightened awareness.  In this workshop participants will learn how to:  Effectively alleviate pain and discomfort brought on by your massage practice;  Become aware of and release holding patterns in the body through yoga poses and breathing practices;  Strengthen the muscles, tendons, and joints that massage therapists use the most in order to prevent injuries from occurring in the future;  Practice breathing techniques to improve your ability to focus, ground and center while giving a bodywork session;  Explore and identify the energietic layers of the body, the koshas;  and much more!

    Daniel Hickman is a Yoga Educator.  After performing for over eight years in theater and dance both nationally and internationally, Daniel answered his higher calling to become a yoga instructor.  He is now on staff at the Nosara Yoga Institute in Costa Rica and honors the school's theory that "Yoga Is An Inquiry."  He assists with the interdisciplinary Yoga and Self-Awakening Yoga Teacher training.  Drawing upon the vastness of the numerous yogic methods both from eastern modalities and western mind-body sciences, Daniel's eclectic teaching style partly comes from his involvement with acupuncturist, massage therapists, chiropractors and in Buddhist mindfulness, martial arts, rock climbing, and modern psychology.  There is no singular way of yoga, but there are countless methods and he promotes the creative path and accumulation of one's own life study and experience.  He encourages the ongoing examination of the self through awareness, compassion and love and by understanding and moving towards that which brings forth one's greatest happiness and peace.  http://www.silkroadyoga.com/main.html

    Class Description: Massage therapists are well aware that there can be confusion between their chosen profession of therapeutic touch and touch which is intimate and sexual in nature. This workshop will help participants be able to: demonstrate an understanding of human sexuality and appropriate therapist response; recognize the emotional/physical/ sexual connection in massage; have a greater awareness of energy transfer in massage; understand personal and professional boundaries concerning sexuality issues in massage; communicate clear professional boundaries to clients; and discover new ways to promote self-care and grounding.  This one of a kind course has been approved by the NCBTMB as  an 21 hours Ethics (includes Standard V) course.

  • Cranial Sacral

    Class Description:  Using a light touch, Cranial Sacral Therapy addresses restrictions held in the body.   Based on the work of Dr. William Sutherland, students will learn to listen and feel with their hands what Dr. Sutherland called the Primary Respiration, the flow of fluids through the cranial sacral system. In this class we will cover the history of this work, from ancient times to the present. Students will study the anatomy of the cerebral spinal fluid and it's flow through the membrane system. A majority of classroom time will be spent with hands on techniques. This class is appropriate for students new to this work as well as those that may like to fine tune their skills. 

    Phyllis Velez, LMT has been teaching in the local area since 1997. She brings to this work an intuitive, gentle touch with an inner strength and understanding of Cranial Sacral Therapy.
